Water and nutrient recovery from stored urine by forward osmosis with an ammonium bicarbonate draw solution

چکیده

Forward osmosis with an ammonium bicarbonate draw solution was investigated as a low energy non-sewered sanitation solution, to recover nutrients and water from source separated urine. Stored urine collected Urine Diversion Dry Toilets in the eThekwini Municipality (Durban), South Africa used feed solution. Water recoveries of up 45.9% fluxes 6.0 L m −2 h −1 were achieved using undiluted stored over 8-h operating period 2.5 M Rejections 95% for phosphates, 85% nitrogen chlorides, 75% potassium sodium achieved. Low fouling membrane observed after multiple runs cleaning by circulation deionized or osmotic backwash sufficient >95% original flux. Little irreversible detected, assumed be caused carbonate calcium scaling SEM-EDX analysis. This study suggests that forward could integrated closed loop nutrient recycling technology prospect clean recovery use waste heat from, example, fecal sludge combustion.

Performance of Potassium Bicarbonate and Calcium Chloride Draw Solutions for Desalination of Saline Water Using Forward Osmosis

Forward osmosis (FO) has recently drawn attention as a promising membrane based method for seawater and brackish water desalination. In this study, we focus on the use of calciun chloride (CaCl2) and potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) as inorganic salt draw solution candidates due to their appropriate performance in water flux and reverse salt diffusion as well as reasonable cost. The experiments we...

Exploring Forward Osmosis Systems for Recovery of Nutrients and Water

Livestock wastewater contains a large amount of nutrients that are available for recovery. In this study, a proof of concept process based on Forward Osmosis (FO) was proposed and investigated for in-situ formation of struvite from digested swine wastewater. This FO system took advantage of a drawback reverse solute flux (RSF) and used the reversed-fluxed Mg for struvite precipitation, thereby ...

Recovery of nitrogen and water from landfill leachate by a microbial electrolysis cell-forward osmosis system.

A microbial electrolysis cell (MEC)-forward osmosis (FO) system was previously reported for recovering ammonium and water from synthetic solutions, and here it has been advanced with treating landfill leachate. In the MEC, 65.7±9.1% of ammonium could be recovered in the presence of cathode aeration. Without aeration, the MEC could remove 54.1±10.9% of ammonium from the leachate, but little ammo...

Sodium Tetraethylenepentamine Heptaacetate as Novel Draw Solute for Forward Osmosis—Synthesis, Application and Recovery

Osmotic energy, as a sustainable energy source with little environmental impact, has drawn much attention in both academia and industry in recent years. Osmotically driven membrane processes can harvest the osmotic energy and thus have great potential to produce sustainable clean water or electric energy. The draw solution, as an osmotic component, has been more and more explored by scientists ...
